Feature - infection control, and training

It is almost impossible to pick up a newspaper and not read about another attack of ‘superbugs’ such as MRSA, in our hospitals. Indeed, there is a threat and the facts provide for a shocking read. In the UK, almost three million people have suffered from a healthcare associated infection during the last decade, amounting to approximately 320, 000 people annually. Even worse, hospital infections are linked to the deaths of up to 5,000 people in the UK every year. We regularly hear of wards having to close due to a recent superbug outbreak. On April 26 2006 the colorectal ward at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital was closed following an outbreak of MRSA, with three patients contracting the resistant strain of the infection.
